According to the order the fare hike also applies to premium trains such as Shatabdi, Rajdhani and Duronto.
In Delhi-Kolkata Rajdhani covering a distance of 1,447 km, the fare at the rate of 4 paise per km would be around Rs 58.
As per the order, there will be no change in reservation fee and superfast fee and the fare hike will not be applicable to tickets already booked.
The last such hike was announced in 2014-2015, when the fares of all classes of trains were increased by 14.2 percent and freight by 6.5 percent. However, since then, the Railways introduced the Flexi-Fare scheme, which significantly increased fares on select trains and ran trains such as Vande Bharat Express and Tejas Express, which have relatively higher fares. Dynamic pricing vehicles like Suvidha Express were also introduced.
The railways said in a statement that the revenue generated from the "modest" increase in fares would be used to modernize the network.
"Indian Railways have consistently endeavored to enhance the passenger experience through modernization of coaches and provision of better facilities at stations. Further, the 7th Pay Commission burden on Indian Railways has necessitated rationalization of fares.
He said, "In order to expand passenger amenities and facilities at various railway stations and trains, it has become mandatory to increase the fare moderately without overburdening any class of passengers. Rapid modernization of Indian Railways through this fare revision Will be obtained from. "
It also said that suburban commuters have been left out of the increase keeping in mind "the concerns regarding the affordability of daily commuters". This class constitutes 66 percent of the total passenger section of the railway.
The fare hike will be on tickets purchased on or after January 1, 2020 and no additional fare (fare difference) will be charged from passengers who book tickets before this date.
Officials said the hike would have no impact on the catering fee.
