Twitter to build a new decentralized social media service Twitter is supporting an open-source, decentralized social network standard called Bluesky. The initiative is an ambitious project which will transform how the company operates and create a new model for social media services. Bluesky would basically be an open protocol that anyone can use. It will take years to develop this protocol. The ultimate aim of the project is to rearchitect Twitter on top of Bluesky. Twitter is funding an independent team of five open-source architects, engineers, and designers to develop this decentralized standard for social media to operate upon.
