Another rule said that speeches/plays/music or any other activities that disturbs the peace of hostel environment is strictly prohibited. “Not allowed even if faculty is part of the gathering. Only matters that are approved by the office of students’ affairs dean will be permitted,” said the rule.
A student on condition of anonymity said that no such common rules were earlier specified. “Every hostel had their own set of rules. The mail that we got last evening mentioned that they are reiterating and highlighting rules. We had no such rules, so I don’t know what was the need to reiterate,” said the student.
Another student said that some of the rules are vague. “They said students should not participate in any ‘undesirable’ activities. It is a subjective term. How do we know what is undesirable and to them?” said the student. The rules even said that there no pirated, unauthorised and unlicensed movies should be screen.
All this is opposed to the group of students and faculty who are protesting on the campus, said the student. After having a sit-in protest for 10 days, and a preamble lecture series for 10 days, the students are now screening movies which are relevant to the present situation in the country. The students from IIT-Bombay for Justice, a collective is now planning to compare the rules with the existing ones and plan to seek an explanation from the authorities.
