My Wife’s Sister Husband was a young man of age 42.He never touched Alcohol and was away from any sort of intoxication.
Suddenly i observed him to be very sick and complaining of tiredness and fever. He used to sleep in the day and complaining of fever and tiredness.
He remained in such condition for 3 months but no improvement was seen.
Hence my sister in law decided to go to chennai Appolo to get medical examination of her husband. There in Appolo he was diagonesed with Cirrhosis of the liver which had almost 90 percent damaged his liver but it was hard for patient and their family to believe that suddenly the liver has been damaged to such a great extent that the doctor had recommended a liver transplant.
But patient and his family could not believe thus fact so they decided to go to Delhi AIIMS .There he got appointment which it self is a difficult procedure but somehow we managed so He and his wife met with Dr Shalimar of AIIMS and discussed about the condition. After a list of test it was clarified that he had Cirrhosis of the liver and needs transplant but Dr.Shalimar wanted to give one try to regenerate his liver or atleast restore some functioning of liver so that an immediate transplant can be avoided.Though Dr.Shalimr Medicines had helped to bring his jaundice down to 3 but after some time again it shoog to 7-8 .Now Dr.Shalimer had also recommended his liver transplant.
Now his wife had to find the Doner so she lined up in a big queue of people who needed liver from patient whose brain is dead due to accident.Offcource the waiting period was long so she requested patient sister to donate her liver .
Patient sister at that time was in hospital assisting her own daughter in delivery procedure.
Now patient brother started to find the best liver transplant Dr And hospital in India and he came up with the name Dr professor Rela in Chennai India who had done liver transplant of 6 day baby girl.
So we flew to chennai to get patient admitted to Rela Medical Institute Under the supervision of Professor Dr.Rela chennai India.
There patient’s sister was called to donate her liver and this time she came to donate to his ailing brother.
They had given a list of documents as per the rule of Tamil Nadu Government to be prepared before sister can donate her liver to her brother.
Since the patient and her sister were from Bihar a state in India all the documents were to be made from Bihar which again can take 15 to 16 days or even more.
But patient father somehow could make all these documents and come back to chennai to give it to us.
So an operation date 3 days ahead of the present was decided and we has transferred 25 lakhs of huge amount into Hospital Liver surgery Account Department.
But Rela Hospital Liver councelling department just one day before the operation had informed that since Doner who was the patient sister husband was in Dubai he was required to be brought or a written consent of doner husband be mailed through post to chennai Rela hospital then only they can perform Liver surgery.
Patient’s wife and me begged to the liver counceller Rela Hospital that doner husband written letter consenting her wife to donate liver is on the way and can take a week to come to chennai from Dubai.
Seeing the present condition of patient as it was deteriorating we had to physically call the doner husband through flight which took just one day.
This was the condition of patient before operation.
But Just after Admission of patient to Rela for Operation his condition became very critical and the patient was transferred to ICU .In the night at around 12 am we were informed about that a CT Scan of the patient will be taken immediately.Patient was taken to the CT Scan center and we were holding our breath and after half an hour of report we had been called for a meeting with the doctors in the councelling room. There we had been informed that the patient’s deep brain nerve has raptured and due to liver failure the blood was thin and blood lacked clotting power thus a small rapture of nervr deep indide brain has caused huge bleeding in the brain and the patient recovery at that point of time diminished to less than 1 percent.
We had been offered 2 optiond
1.Drilling hole inside brain and bring the the accumulated fluid out through pipe which was a huge risk as blood had no clotting power due to liver failures could lead to huge blood flow. And due to liver failures there was a huge chance of getting infection in the wound.
2.This option was the option of medicine which require no surgery but as we know ailing liver could further damaged by medication.
As we were not left with much options we had to go with medication where chances of getting back to consciousness was very little.
Dictors said since the bleed is on the right part of brain his left pary will be paralysed.
And Doctors said his chances of recovery was lesss than 1 percent. So we had no option other than to call our Lord for Help.
We devouted times in prayers expecting some miracles to happen.
And miracle happened as 2nd morning he started moving his limbs and it was a new hope for us as our prayers had been working And we thought that Allah who is the Rahaman has rewritten his fate.
But after 5 to 6 days of waiting where we had prayed and Doctors had administered medicines had no significant change of patient And doctors said that his aituatiin was the same as before with no significant sign of recovery.
The cost of treatment is Rs 1 lakh/ day whuch is a huge amount but without any hope.Doctors telling us that his chanced of recovery is less than 1 percent .
But still we have not lost hope from Allah as he is the most merciful and forgiver of our mistakes and sins.
But ine thing is for sure that it is not the world best surgeon like Rela or hispital like Rela medical institute that can save the life of patient but it is Allah along to does that and we attribute our success to Doctors..
Dictors are the factor only the doer is Allah Alone.
A liver transplant is a surgical procedure that removes a liver that no longer functions properly (liver failure) and replaces it with a healthy liver from a deceased donor or a portion of a healthy liver from a living donor.
Your liver is your largest internal organ and performs several critical functions, including
- Processing nutrients, medications and hormones
- Producing bile, which helps the body absorb fats, cholesterol and fat-soluble vitamins
- Making proteins that help the blood clot
- Removing bacteria and toxins from the blood
- Preventing infection and regulating immune responses
Why it’s done
Liver transplant is a treatment option for people with liver failure whose condition can’t be controlled with other treatments and for some people with liver cancer.
Liver failure may happen quickly or over a long period of time. Liver failure that occurs quickly, in a matter of weeks, is called acute liver failure. Acute liver failure is an uncommon condition that is usually the result of complications from certain medications.
Although a liver transplant may treat acute liver failure, it is more often used to treat chronic liver failure. Chronic liver failure occurs slowly over months and years.
Chronic liver failure may be caused by a variety of conditions. The most common cause of chronic liver failure is scarring of the liver (cirrhosis). When cirrhosis occurs, scar tissue replaces normal liver tissue and causes the liver to not function properly. Cirrhosis is the most frequently reason for a liver transplant.
Major causes of cirrhosis leading to liver failure and liver transplant include:
- Hepatitis B and C.
- Alcoholic liver disease, which causes damage to the liver due to excessive alcohol consumption.
- Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, a condition in which fat builds up in the liver, causing inflammation or liver cell damage.
- Genetic diseases affecting the liver, including hemochromatosis, which causes excessive iron buildup in the liver, and Wilson’s disease, which causes excessive copper buildup in the liver.
- Diseases that affect the bile ducts (the tubes that carry bile away from the liver), such as primary biliary cirrhosis, primary sclerosing cholangitis and biliary atresia. Biliary atresia is the most common reason for liver transplant among children.
Risks
Complications of the procedure
Liver transplant surgery carries a risk of significant complications. There are risks associated with the procedure itself as well as with the drugs necessary to prevent rejection of the donor liver after the transplant.
Risks associated with the procedure include:
- Bile duct complications, including bile duct leaks or shrinking of the bile ducts
- Bleeding
- Blood clots
- Failure of donated liver
- Infection
- Rejection of donated liver
- Mental confusion or seizures
Long-term complications may also include recurrence of liver disease in the transplanted liver.
Anti-rejection medication side effects
After a liver transplant, you’ll take medications for the rest of your life to help prevent your body from rejecting the donated liver. These anti-rejection medications can cause a variety of side effects, including:
- Bone thinning
- Diabetes
- Diarrhea
- Headaches
- High blood pressure
- High cholesterol
