SC notice to UP on plea against riot damages | India News NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday issued notice to the Uttar Pradesh government on a plea seeking quashing of notices sent to alleged protesters by district administration for recovering losses caused by damage to public properties during the anti-CAA agitation in the state. A bench of Justices D Y Chandrachud and K M Joseph sought response from the UP government on a petition alleging that the state administration had issued notices in “illegal and arbitrary” manner. The petitioner alleged that recovery notice was issued to “harass innocent people” and pointed out that notice was also issued to a person who had died six years ago. The counsel appearing for petitioner Parwaiz Arif Titu said notices were issued as per the Allahabad High Court judgement delivered in 2010 but the verdict is itself “in violation of the guidelines” laid down by the top court in a 2009 verdict which was later reaffirmed in a 2018 order. ...

NEW DELHI: Government ’s price capping of essential medicines has failed to make drugs affordable and instead led to a hike in prices of such products as compared to ‘unregulated’ ones, says the Economic Survey while advocating “non-distortionary” mechanisms to keep prices under check. The survey suggests that government—as a huge buyer of drugs through its various schemes and mechanisms such as CGHS, defence, railways, etc—combine its purchases and use its bargaining power effectively to provide affordable drugs. “The increase in prices is greater for more expensive formulations than for cheaper ones and for those sold in hospitals rather than retail shops. These findings reinforce that the outcome is opposite to what DPCO (Drug Price Control Order) aims to do—making drugs affordable,” it said. HYDERABAD: An alleged tax-evasion fraud involving agents sending students to study medicine in the Philippines was busted by the Warangal unit of the directorate general of GST intelligence (DGGI) on Friday after searches in Hyderabad, Vijayawada , Chennai and Pune. Officials suspect the racket could run into several hundreds of crores as the accused have been operating for over 20 years. Agents collected the initial fee in cash minus any invoice, thereby pocketing the entire amount without paying any tax, officials claimed. NEW DELHI: Air India’s jumbo B747 plane, evacuating 324 Indian nationals from the novel coronavirus-hit Wuhan in China, landed here on Saturday morning, officials said. The plane reached Delhi around 7.30 am, they said. There were five doctors from Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital and one paramedical staff on board, said an Air India spokesperson. The Indian Army has set up a quarantine facility in Manesar near Delhi to keep those evacuated from China’s Hubei province . SINDH: In yet another case of forced conversion in Pakistan, a Hindu girl was abducted during her wedding ceremony and was married off to a Muslim man after being converted to Islam. The woman- Bharti Bai- was abducted by a group of people during her marriage ceremony on Saturday in Hala, a city located in Matiari district in Sindh province. She was then married to Shah Rukh Gul. The authorities have not taken any action against the abductors. According to reports, the police helped the men in forcibly taking away the bride. Every year, around 1,000 young Sindhi Hindu girls between the age of 12 and 28 are abducted, forcibly married and converted to Islam, US-based Sindhi Foundation has said.
